How long have you been riding?:

I started riding when I was 3 years old.
What is your first memory of riding?:

I remember riding Mr. John Stumps
horse Tap-Mac and doing a posting
trot in the outdoor ring at the old
Greenfield’s and learning my
diagonals. I also remember Mom-
mom (Marilyn) telling me I learned
them really fast. I remember how
special it made me feel.
Up to this point, what are some of the
highlights of your time with horses?:

In the past I was always put on the best
horses or ponies. And usually the kind
that required a strong leg and a good bit
of pushing. This past fall I got to ride a
horse that basically changed my whole
way of thinking about riding. Skippy is a
big, 17 hand, grey, off the track
thoroughbred that I got to ride when we
were finished fox hunting. My sister
(Priscilla) and I had to go back out and
call in a few puppies, so the huntsman
(Mr. Jimmy) put me up on his horse and
off we went. I guess I had a major
breakthrough riding Skippy because it
was the first time I had to change my
style of riding and adapt to the horse. I
had to change the way I let my leg lay on
the horse, and also instead of asking him
to do something, you really just had to
think it. Its wasn’t that Skippy was a
difficult horse or that he was wild, but if I
didn’t change right then, and figure out
how to relax at that minute we would
have most likely been off galloping into
the sun set. I really think that what I
learned out there in the woods will be
with me for a long time. Just relaxing and
letting horses be.
What are some of your riding goals?:

I want to keep learning how to ride horses.
Lots of different horses and do it well. Since
riding Skippy I guess I have a desire to just
ride and see how far it takes me!
What do you enjoy most about
horses?:

I just enjoy watching them.
When they play and interact
with each other you can see
their different characters. I
would say they have feelings
and emotions just like people.
And when your on a horse, you
can connect to those feelings
and emotions, and that’s just
an amazing feeling.
Tell us about the ponies you’ve riding since you started
riding:

  • First was Captain Crunch - aka Crunchy: I
remember that he was so hard to keep going! You
had to kick and kick just to keep him walking.

  • Second was Pepper: she was the first pony I
    learned to jump on!

  • Third was Chocolate Kiss - aka Kiss: I rode her a
lot, and did a lot of showing with her.

  • Fourth was Shenandoah Sparkle - aka Sparkle: I
rode her and showed her a lot too!

  • Fifth was Sparkle Plenty - aka Sparkle: I
remember when I got her, there were purple
ribbons in her mane and tail, and I remember
Mom-mom telling me she would be my new pony.
The only trouble was, she was going to have a
baby! I remember when she had the baby, and
watching him grow up. We called him Sparky!

  • Sixth and finally pony (as of now) is Scat Man-Du -
aka Scattie: He is the first pony that I feel like I’ve
connected with. I feel like I can do anything with
    him. Its just amazing.
Do you enjoy other hobbies outside of horses?:

I play the cello. I’ve been playing since I was in
4th grade. I do pen and ink drawings. I was
asked to do several illustrations for Alex Brown’
s book, Greatness & Goodness: Barbaro & His
Legacy, which comes out at the end of March
2011. I’ve been pretty excited about that.
I also practice Archery with my little sister
Maggie at Owl Brook in New Hampshire and I’
ve been studying Latin.
Some of my favorite quotes:

no ride is ever the last one. no horse
is ever the last one you will have.
there will always be other horses,
other places to ride them.-monica

riding a horse is not a gentle hobby,
to be picked up and laid down like a
game of solitaire. it is a grand
passion.-ralph waldo emerson
